The state made it difficult for districts to switch to remote or hybrid instruction this year , absent a state of emergency declaration from Gov.
Bill Lee and approval from the Tennessee Department of Education. Individual schools are also forbidden from offering hybrid instruction. Therefore, most students in quarantine, even those well enough to learn, must do their school work independently.
Many schools are putting together packets and are still in the planning stages for students missing school days. Teachers are also concerned about missing school days due to illness or quarantine. Federal COVID leave is no longer available, so teachers must use their own personal sick days or leave time to quarantine.
At a recent school board meeting, several members of the Metro Nashville Education Association — the local teachers union — called on school board members to address these concerns.
This is especially difficult for new teachers who just don't have very many sick days yet or teachers who have medical conditions and have to be more careful and quarantine more often," Cassie Norton, a Metro Schools teacher said during last week's board meeting. Braisted said in his email that the district anticipated students and staff would have to quarantine or might even test positive this school year.
More on masks: Metro Nashville Public Schools outlines discipline policy for students who refuse to wear masks. The district's school nurse program is working with the Metro Public Health Department and schools to contract trace and notify families of potential exposures.
Currently, only 51 schools have a full-time nurse on staff with another 64 schools sharing a nurse. Some cover two or more schools. The district is still looking to fill another 35 vacant nurse positions.
School nurses are also able to perform rapid COVID tests on-site with parent permission, but the district does not have plans to sample or random test this school year. Similar to last school year, the district will not report daily cases or quarantines unless a school is required to close. Instead, the district will update cases counts on a weekly basis on Mondays, Braisted told The Tennessean. A sentence has been newly added to the district's COVID tracker page — found here — as well: "Numbers do not necessarily indicate transmission of the virus inside the school building," it reads.
